About the Town Name Generator

The Town Name Generator is a free, no-signup tool that produces believable town names in six distinct styles: cozy English village, American small town, western frontier, fantasy hamlet, spooky and gothic, and coastal fishing town. Each style draws on its own curated word bank of prefixes, founder surnames, landscape stems, genuine toponymic suffixes, and geographic terms, more than two hundred and fifty components in total, assembled by combination schemes modeled on how real town names actually formed. Many results arrive with a one-line flavor description, a first-visit sketch of the town you can drop straight into a location card or a scene.

Who it is for

The tool exists for anyone who has to put convincing names on invented settlements. Worldbuilders use it to populate maps where neighboring towns feel named by the same culture rather than sprinkled at random. Game masters running tabletop campaigns generate a bench of towns before a session so an improvised overland journey never stalls at "you arrive at, um, a village." Novelists use it to find the one name whose sound fits their setting, and game designers use it to fill maps, quest text, and lore documents with names that stay consistent inside a region. If you have ever stared at a blank spot on a map where a town should be, this tool was built for you.

Who runs it

This site is operated by Crossroads Technologies LLC, a small independent studio that builds focused, single-purpose web utilities, and it is part of the NamesPlease family of free name generators. The word banks and assembly rules are curated and maintained by us directly. The worked examples on the front page are produced by the exact same code that powers the button and are verified by automated tests, so what the page shows is what the tool truly does.

Privacy

The generator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type or generate is sent to a server, there is no account system, and there are no usage limits. Names you generate are yours to keep and use in personal or commercial projects alike; we claim no rights over the output. For the full details, see our privacy policy.
